A soffit is both a functional and aesthetic component of a roof. The main purpose of a soffit is to protect roof rafters from the weather elements. Soffits often have vents that provide air movement and ventilation to your attic, reducing the amount of heat and moisture that may collect. This prevents mold, mildew, and wood rot from causing roof damage.
Not every home features prominent soffits, particularly post World War II homes built with minimal roof overhangs at the eave. These home builds may feature no soffit at all.

A soffit is made from wood, aluminum, or vinyl — generally depending on the climate of the home.
The cost to replace a soffit is roughly $30 installed. This assumes the technician does not need to remove your fascia board or gutter system.
The time to replace a soffit can vary depending on the amount of rot or warping of the material. A soffit is generally more susceptible to water damage than a fascia due to the under roof location and water flow. A competent roofer team can replace 50-100 feet of roof soffits in a day. You can expect 2-3 days of work to replace the full soffits of a home.
Most gutter and roofing companies will replace fascia boards and soffits. If you have any questions regarding a repair or replacement, feel free to reach out with questions or concerns.
